Mothers Day

Mothers day this year was great as usual, with lots of happy families out for Sunday lunch.
We have a tradition of giving little pot plants to every mum that eats here on Mothers day, and this year we gave away over 50 polyanthus to mums that all seemed very grateful for a day away from their usual chores.
We should all remember to tell our mums how much we love them throughout the year, but why not have a special day to say “thank-you” for all they do for us?
So here’s a big THANK YOU MUM from all of us.

Marion’s wedding

Those of you that visit our Facebook page regularly will have already seen the photos of Marion (our wedding coordinator) and Stu’s wedding that was held here at the end of January. It was a great day and Marion got to experience the same feelings of joy, nerves, happiness and all the other emotions that we know brides and grooms feel in the months prior to their wedding. Below are a couple of pictures I took of Marion and her new husband signing the register, the back of Marion’s beautiful silver wedding dress and one of the fantastic cheese-cake.

During the time since my last posting we have also had Valentines day which went well with lots of lovely couples out celebrating.

Hopefully I’ll have lots of nice things to post about in the near future, in the mean while don’t forget to keep an eye on our twitter feed and Facebook page.

Wedding coordinators wedding

For the last few months we’ve been building up to our wedding coordinator’s wedding. Yes, Marion has finally decided to take the plunge and get hitched to her long term partner. The wedding is being held here (of course) and it’s been lovely to watch Marion go through the all the same things our brides & grooms have to go through. Debating colours, candles, tables and hairstyles and choosing dresses, handbags, menus etc…
The big day is creeping up quickly, but I’ll be taking photos to put in our Facebook photo albums. So don’t forget to keep an eye on the Compass Inn page for those (if I’m good I’ll blog some here too)

We wish Marion and Stu all the best on their big day.

Paella, Afternoon Tea and a Vegan Wedding menu

No this isn’t the start of one of my dreadful jokes it’s some of the things the chefs have been cooking for the last couple weddings.  I know I’ve blogged before about how proud we are to be able to offer an individual approach to each and every wedding held here, but I think the last few weeks have proved how diverse we can be.  Much to the dismay of our head chef Karl, we actually have a picture of him cooking a giant paella for a wedding a couple of weeks ago (see below) and the next week we had a bride and groom who chose a full afternoon tea for their meal then a pig roast for their night party. The biggest challenge our kitchen brigade have faced recently though, was undoubtedly the completely vegan wedding menu we cooked for a bride and groom, This involved a great deal of coordinating with the bride, and enabled the chefs to work with several products they had never used before. As a result the staff got to taste several “trial runs” all of which were pretty well received. Many people even said they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the vegan cheesecake and a normal cheesecake.  I can hardly claim we’re vegan specialists, but it was certainly fun to cater for, and it’s something else we can say we’ve now done.

An update at last.

We failed miserably to keep our promise of regularly updating this blog, however I refuse to let it roll over and die (I do have the small excuse of now having a 14 week old baby).  As I have absolutely no chance of filling you all in on the last several dozen weddings I will pick up from the last couple of weeks.

The Facebook group is going quite well (we have nearly 200 fans) and people are posting lovely comments and beautiful pictures quite regularly now, which we really love.  The photo albums on Facebook are quite up to date and already have some wedding pictures from June and July this year (shock horror, at least something is up to date)

Every wedding has something that makes it stand out, and sometimes its just a little detail.   The wedding held here last Friday chose to walk from the side of the room which was unusual but looked really lovely and gave a very personal feel to the ceremony.  One of my favourite things though was the brides fuchsia pink underskirt and floor length hair ribbon, both of these things were very subtle but effective.

More photos coming soon, but in the meantime keep an eye on our Twitter http://www.twitter.com/compassinn  and Facebook pages http://www.facebook.com/compassinn

New Begining

The start of 2010 heralds more than just the start of a new year for us here at The Compass Inn particularly in the wedding department.  One of our wedding coordinators, Heidi Kirley has left us for pastures new after 12 years (ish) of working with us, Heidi’s new job will fit in perfectly with her family life and we wish her all the best in her new position at a local school.  However sad for us this may be, we have had to find someone else to help Penny with all the weddings and functions we have booked here over the coming weeks and months, and so we are pleased to announce that a young lady who has worked for us in a part-time capacity for a long time, has now joined the team full-time as our new wedding administrator.  Her name is Marion Jeffcoate and she is very keen to get stuck into the first few weddings of this year in her new role.  Whilst I’m sure you’ll all meet her in good time, at the moment Marion is mainly getting into swing of things, picking up with the vast amount of paperwork the new year has brought with it.

So to Heidi and Marion we wish you both a great deal of luck in your new jobs, and to our Brides/Grooms and all our other customers, we wish you the very best for 2010.

Too much Twittering, not enough wedding blogging.

Damn it! we just got into the swing of blogging every week and then we have one week without a wedding (although we did have Badminton Horse trials instead) and it all goes to pot. To fill you in on the last couple of weekends, we had a great wedding that used afternoon tea very effectively as light meal before a hog-roast for the evening party, this was a really interesting idea and worked well, funnily enough we have another “afternoon tea” wedding in a few weeks time so it looks like a new fashion emerging, there are a couple of pictures of the table set up with the afternoon tea on our Facebook page just search for “The Compass Inn” and browse our our picture galleries. Last weekend we had an engagement party on Saturday for a local girl and her fiancee which went very well and everyone seemed to have a great time. On Sunday we had a wedding which had chosen the unusual colour combination of cream and midnight blue, it was nice to see a departure from the classic pastel shades associated with summer weddings and it looked really smart. Sadly we don’t have any pictures but if we get sent any we will post them up.

The Compass Inn now Twitters to follow our tweeting go to http://twitter.com/compassinn for those of you that haven’t discovered the joys of twitter it is like a little mini blog that people update several times daily (Stephen Fry, Obama, No10 Downing St. and hundreds of other people twitter) our latest “Tweet” can be found in the top left corner of this page on our Twitter-feed. So despite our lack of blogging recently we have been twittering feverishly.

Short Badminton Update

The last of the traffic jams have disappeared meaning that Badminton Horse Trials has packed up and finished for another year.   I did mention in the last blog  if anything else interesting happened over the weekend I would update, and it did.  Somebody on their way out of the event was too busy playing with their sat-nav and in a momentary laps of concentration ploughed their car in to the side of the building.  Luckily not too much dammage has been caused, just a couple of broken pipes and a very old, heavy saddle-stone which was unlucky enough to be in the path of the car was sheered in half prior to the car gouging a lump out of the kitchen wall. The good news is that nobody was injured during this short spell of off-road driving.

Well at least we can’t say Badminton weekend was dull!

Badminton begins!

As many of you know the first weekend in May is usualy Badminton Horse Trials, one of the largest outdoor sporting events in the world.  This event brings 400,000 people to the sleepy village of Badminton (with a normal population of only a few hundred) for 4 days, as you can imagine this makes us really quite busy throughout the whole hotel! It may be manically busy but we do get to see a great selection of people over these few days including riders, owners, trainers, interesting stall holders and plenty of other people.  For the last 3 days we have had a helicopter landing in the grounds of the hotel which has spawned plenty of rumours about us having a celebrity guest staying for the weekend, alas this is not the case we simply had some nice chaps staying who use it for their work, but never-the-less it has kept everyone talking.  The strange thing is we had a 2nd guest ask to land a helicopter on Thursday night which would have meant for the first time ever we would have had 2 here at the same time, sadly they had to cancel due to the strong winds we have been experiencing over the last few days.

We may well blog again next week if we get any exciting news from the weekend.

Quick Wedding Update

Godfrey Wedding Godfrey WeddingJust a quick update whilst we are preparing for today’s wedding, getting the hog roast set up and the pig cooking (they seem to take forever but they always smell fab) whilst sorting out all the little fiddly bits like flowers and favours.  It’s these little details that make every wedding individual to the couple involved, and although they may seem unimportant it would be very dull if we all liked the same things.

Last weekend we had the wedding of Jodie & Clive Godfrey who had chosen Periwinkle blue as the colour for the bridesmaids along with spring flowers in pastle shades, this was a lovely combination and many people commented on how refreshing it was as a theme proving that Sometimes keeping it simple and in touch with the season is the best policy.  Congratulations to Jodie and Clive and all the best for the future from everyone here at the Compass Inn.
